Training International Learners and Trainees (TILT)

Group 10847

Course Overview

Language barriers and cultural differences require a multi-faceted approach to training. Your instructors need specialist tools and techniques to deliver technical training effectively to students who speak English as a second or third language.

Our unique trainer training programme, TILT (Training International Learners and Trainees), has been created for personnel who are working with international clients and partner forces. Designed to enhance training delivery techniques as well as build better relationships, the course focuses on culture, communication, training techniques and lesson design.

TILT has been delivered to over 2,500 UK military and commercial instructors since 2016. Clients include the Land Warfare Centre and Army Recruiting and Initial Training Command, Leonardo Helicopters, the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, the South West School for NDT and Army Special Operations Branch.

With our help, your instructors will:

  • Understand and minimise the impact of cultural differences
  • Increase engagement and participation
  • Reduce reiteration, misunderstanding and errors
  • Meet the needs of different student types / language levels
  • Innovate their delivery to benefit all students
  • Save valuable planning time

Learning outcomes

Each course is designed to address the needs of the instructors, the training and the mix of students they will be working with. The course culminates in an assessed session, either in the form of a ‘micro-teach’ (small portion of a larger lesson) that incorporates the techniques taught, or by preparing and defending a lesson plan for a 45-min session.

We tailor each TILT course to the regions in which you work, to improve the experience of the international students and the instructors too. Our participants say they feel prepared, more confident and have a true understanding of cultural dynamics in the classroom.

An holistic assessment approach is taken throughout the course and homework is issued after most sessions. A report on the performance of individual participants (with a rating per participant) is provided after the programme is complete. JPA Competency is awarded for the full 3-day IDT(A) courses which culminate in assessments.

Core modules include:

  • Trainer self-awareness
  • Important learning theories
  • Experiential learning
  • Breaking down language and learning barriers
  • Specialist techniques including:
    • Contextualising, eliciting and concept checking
    • Scanning and PoP
    • Effective questioning
    • Feedback techniques
  • Designing effective materials and activities
  • Culture and its impact on learning
  • Planning for the multi-national group
  • An introduction to IELTS

WORKING WITH THE BRITISH ARMY SINCE 2016

Approximately 1,500 military students from all over the world attend courses presented by the British Army in the UK every year. The experience an international military student has whilst on a UK course is critical in forming his or her opinion about the British Army and the UK.

Sterling Training designs and delivers many TILT courses each year, helping accomplished defence instructors to enhance the experience of international students in UK training centres and Army Schools or receiving instruction in-country.

“Sterling Training’s TILT course addresses an identified gap in the instructor’s training. There is no doubt that the training will enhance the international student’s experience, which leads to better Defence Engagement. The course has the potential to be rolled out across the MOD, as well as the many Short Term Training Teams that deploy abroad to deliver military training.”

Lieutenant Colonel James Askew, S01 IDT(A)

Sterling Training has been delivering defence trainer training programmes since 2015 and is delighted to be working with military instructors from many of the Army schools, as well as a number of defence primes.
