Course Overview

Striving for best trainer practice among its own staff, in 2016 Sterling Training designed a unique trainer training programme, TILT (Training International Learners and Trainees).

TILT has now been delivered to over 2,000 UK military instructors through the Land Warfare Centre (LWC) and Army Recruiting
and Initial Training Command (ARITC), the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS) and Army Special Operations Branch (ASOB Rangers).

With our help, your instructors will:

  • Increase engagement and participation
  • Reduce reiteration, misunderstanding and errors
  • Meet the needs of different student types / language levels
  • Understand and minimise the impact of cultural differences
  • Innovate their delivery to benefit all students
  • Save valuable planning time

What You Will Learn

We tailor the TILT course to improve the experience of the international students and ease the instructors’ workload. Instructors say they feel prepared, more confident and have a true understanding of cultural dynamics in the classroom.

Language barriers and cultural differences require a multi-faceted approach to training. Military instructors need specialist tools and techniques to deliver technical training effectively to students who speak English as a second, or third, language.

Each course is different and designed to address the needs of the instructors, the training and the mix of students they will be working with. Most choose the full 3-day course, others pick and mix the modules that suit their needs and build a more bespoke programme.

Core modules include:

  • Trainer self-awareness
  • Important learning theories
  • Experiential learning
  • Breaking down language and learning barriers
  • Specialist techniques including:
    • Contextualising, eliciting and concept checking
    • Scanning and PoP
    • Effective questioning
    • Feedback techniques
  • Designing effective materials and activities
  • Culture and its impact on learning
  • Planning for the multi-national group
  • An introduction to IELTS

WORKING WITH THE BRITISH ARMY

Approximately 1,500 military students from all over the world attend courses presented by the British Army in the UK every year.

The experience an international military student has whilst on a UK course is critical in forming his or her opinion about the British Army and the UK.

Sterling Training designs and delivers courses that teach elite Army instructors how to deliver training to international students, enhance their experience and ease the instructors’ workload.

Lieutenant Colonel James Askew, S01 IDT(A) said:

“Sterling Training’s course addresses an identified gap in the instructor’s training. There is no doubt that the training will enhance the international student’s experience, which leads to better Defence Engagement. The course has the potential to be rolled out across the MOD, as well as the many Short Term Training Teams that deploy abroad to deliver military training.”

Sterling Training has been delivering this training for 7 years and is delighted to be working with military instructors from many of the Army schools.
